Secluded

ARTIST: PAIGEN KOTZE
COUNTRY: SOUTH AFRICA
MATERIALS USED: ACRYLIC PAINT, MARKERS and CHALK

This artwork comments on feelings of dissociation and “internal seclusion” that result from physical seclusion, in other words… isolation. This is communicated through the fragmentation of the figure.

The placement of the hands in a praying position further communicates the element of hope and spiritual security that is much needed during these difficult times.

I have further used the cubes to reinforce the concept of physical seclusion as they represent closed-off boxes of space, and hence creating a feeling of confinement.

The orbs with crown-like projections directly reference SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that is responsible for the COVID-19 outbreak. This places the artwork in context, commenting on seclusion during the ongoing pandemic.
